Common Societal Beauty BeliefsAs a society we are taught and continue to teach, preach, and practice certain beauty ideals. Weight, especially for women, matters. Generally long hair and other features that make a woman look feminine, like rosy cheeks and long eyelashes, are ideal. All the ideals break women up into certain body parts and aspects. This video shows how women's ideal bodies have changed over the years. The video is portrayed by women from today who show all these body types have always existed, but it just depends what time period it is for wether they are idealized or not.

What Are We Teaching Our Kids? The beauty ideals kids see in media is not the only thing influencing them, but the way their parents and peers dress and perceive beauty is going to greatly affect them as well. One American study found that 81% of ten-year-old girls had already dieted at least once. Kids learn about dieting not only from TV and advertisements, but also from family and friends. If we surround our kids with positive and healthy body images in their everyday life they are more likely to be less susceptible to outside influence.

Changing The Way We ThinkOne article I found while researching it said, "when I think of the relationship between beauty and the media it leads me to question whether we allow the media to construct our thoughts on beauty, or whether the media simply reflects how beauty is perceived." These are the questions and thoughts we as a society need to be having if we want there to a real change what ideal beauty means. People like the model Chantelle Winnie are helping to change what it means to be beautiful.
